Make Your Own Chalkboard

If you have noticed, and I am sure you have, but chalkboard paint is EVERYWHERE! I love chalkboard paint because it is so versatile. It can be used on just about any surface and can make personalizing objects super easy. Don’t like the results? Just wipe the chalk off and you are free to start again.

There are a few steps you need to take in order to have chalkboard painting success.

I suggest sanding the surface of your item just a little to give the paint something to ‘grab on too’. A mid grit sandpaper will do nicely. Be sure to wipe away the dust.

I suggest using a foam brush when applying the paint. There is less of a chance of leaving stroke marks if there are no bristles to make the marks in the first place!

I suggest 3 coats of chalkboard paint at a minimum. With each coat you are going to want to go in the opposite direction. This gives optimal coverage and will help alleviate any stroke marks (even a foam brush can leave a mark if you are not super duper careful).

Allow your chalkboard painted item to dry completely and for best results ‘cure’ for 24 hours. Be sure to check the side of your can for any special instructions that may be required for your brand of paint.

Once cured and dry, take the flat edge of a piece of chalk and swipe it over the chalkboard completely. For some reason this ‘primes’ the chalkboard.

Definitely us the wide and flat edge of the chalk. I have used the tip and tried scribbling but there were scratch marks left over.

Wipe off the chalk and you are all set to go!
