How To ~ Make a Homemade Black Bean Burger

I am a huge fan of black bean burgers. Simple, quick, easy to prepare, healthier than other options but have you seem the price these days?! Unless I have a coupon and they are on sale it is rare that I am purchasing them from the frozen foods section of my grocery store. A 4 pack of black bean burger patties will conservatively cost me $4.25. That is not how this penny pincher wants to spend her pennies! Here is my tutorial on how I make my black bean burger for about $.25 a piece.

Ingredients:

  • 1 can 15 oz. Black Beans ($.50)
  • 1 large egg ($.11)
  • 2 Tablespoons of your favorite salsa. ($.20 but hopefully you made some yourself this summer.) No? Come check out my tutorial HERE for salsa verde and give it a try. It is simple.
  • 1/3-1/2 c crushed pretzels ($.20)
  • Yields 4 patties
The ingredients are correct but the pricing may vary for you depending on food cost in your area.
Here is a video on how I make the black bean burgers.

For those of you who would rather read instructions instead of watching a video here are your instructions:
Instructions:
  1. Rinse and drain the beans.
  2. Transfer to a bowl and start mashing the beans with the tines of a fork.
  3. Add a large egg.
  4. Stir to incorporate.
  5. Add 2 tablespoons of your favorite salsa.
  6. Stir to incorporate.
  7. Add 1/3 – 1/2 cups crushed pretzels. Allow the mixture to rest for a few minutes to absorb the moisture of the egg and the salsa. Adjust depending on the moisture level of the salsa.
  8. Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and form into patties.
  9. Using 1 teaspoon of peanut oil (or frying oil of your choice) in a non stick skillet, pan sear them on each side for 2 minutes per side or until cooked through.
Once it is crispy on the second side it is done!
Serve with a couple more scoops of salsa or a dollop of sour cream and you have a delicious home made black bean burger. I especially enjoy my burger topped with fresh sliced avocado. The textures and flavors of the crispy outside of the burger  with the hot center is mouth watering with the cool, creamy buttery flavor of the avocado.

How do you take your black bean burger?

** Snyders of Hanover was mentioned in the video but How I Pinch A Penny has not been compensated in any way for the mention. I simply love the pretzels and has them in the house when the video was filmed.
